On September 22, 2011, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) approved InfoGard Laboratories’ Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances (EPCS) Certification Process. InfoGard’s Certification Process was exhaustively reviewed and explicitly Announced as Approved by the DEA. By contrast, Audit processes are not specifically sanctioned by the DEA.
The primary challenge for achieving EPCS compliance is meeting EPCS Security Requirements. EPCS compliance requires the use of Digital signatures, Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 Validated Cryptographic Modules, and Two-Factor Authentication. Specific requirements for EPCS also govern the use of Authentication Tokens and Biometric Devices for Authentication.
