Laboratory approval and certification is required to sell your Personal Identity Verification (PIV) product or service into the US Federal Government.

Homeland Security Presidential Directive (HSPD)-12 mandates the use of approved credentials for federal employees and contractors for physical and logical access to federal facilities, a market encompassing millions of people. FIPS 201 programs at GSA and NIST provide the product approval and certification mechanisms.

• PIV smart card and middleware components must be certified through NPIVP by an accredited NPIVP laboratory and then also by GSA.
  
• Any product or service for sale within the FIPS 201 PIV program must be validated by a GSA approved laboratory and approved by GSA prior to being placed on the appropriate procurement schedule.
